Below are course descriptions for core PPW courses. Courses marked with an asterisk fulfill the campus Advanced Composition (Comp II) requirement.
Students will learn and apply principles governing page design, style sheets, document layout, effective graphics, managing the design process, and usability testing. Students will create a portfolio of design projects, including one major project for a client. Professional writing majors enrolled in BTW 220 must enroll in BTW 290 for 1 hour of credit. Frequency: 1 section offered most semesters Credit: 2 hours Students enrolling in BTW 220 should have basic familiarity with computers and file-saving. Courses may be held in either PC or Mac labs, based upon availability and instructor preference. BTW 250 Business and Administrative Communication One of PPWs core introductory course in business communication, BTW 250 teaches students to apply the principles of successful professional communication to business writing tasks. Students will also practice editing and supervising the writing of others. Assignments replicate typical business cases and situations, including a report that requires students to compile and interpret research. Credit is not given for both BTW 250 and either 253, 261, or 263. Prerequisite: Junior standing and completion of campus Composition I requirement. Note: We do not overenroll or wait list students for this course. Students wishin to take this course must register online through the online registration system. Frequency: Approximately 20 sections offered each semester. Credit: 3 hours *This course fulfills the campus Advanced Composition (Comp II) requirement. BTW 261 Technical and Scientific Communication* Offers students opportunities to apply the principles of successful professional communication to a range of problems, scenarios, and situations in technical and scientific communication. The course emphasizes realistic assignments. Frequently, students produce major projects designed in conjunction with local and national engineering firms. All sections of 261 make use of the computer classroom, and students are expected to master basic techniques for working with electronic as well as paper documents. Frequency: Approximately 4 sections offered each semester Credit: 3 hours *This course fulfills the campus Advanced Composition (Comp II) requirement. BTW 263 Writing Topics in the Professions* This course teaches students to apply the principles of successful professional communication to the writing tasks typical of specific disciplines or professions. Students will also practice editing and supervising the writing of others. Assignments will vary, depending on the focus of the course, but will include a substantial report or project. Recent topics include: Grant Writing, Legal Writing, Science Journalism, Ethics and Workplace Culture Credit: 3 hours *This course fulfills the campus Advanced Composition (Comp II) requirement. BTW 271 Persuasive Writing (same as ADV 288) This course teaches students to apply the principles of successful persuasive communication to the writing of advertising, marketing, and public relations documents. Students will analyze, design, and write a range of persuasive documents, including media releases, print advertising, direct mail, promotional materials, and recommendation reports. Frequency: Approximately 4 sections offered each semester Credit: 3 hours This course teaches students to apply the principles of successful professional communication to the writing and presenting of research reports. The first half of the semester introduces students to the principles of controlling and conveying complex information; students practice applying these principles in a series of short reports. The second half of the semester is typically devoted to a substantial collaborative project. Frequency: Credit: 3 hours This course teaches students to analyze, execute, and manage complex writing tasks. Students will practice editing and supervising the writing of others. Recent topics include: Introduction to Web Design, Document Design, Visual and Verbal Rhetoric Frequency: 1 section each semester, varying topics Credit: 3 hours BTW 277 Advanced Technical and Scientific Communication This course teaches students to analyze, execute, and manage complex technical writing tasks, with special emphasis on advanced technological solutions to communications problems. Prerequisites: BTW 253, BTW 261, BTW 263, or consent of instructor. Frequency: Approximately 4 sections offered each semester Credit: 3 hours This independent study course is best suited to students who have already completed either 250, 271, or 272 and would like to do special work in a topic not covered in these courses. Before attempting to enroll, students should identify a topic for study and talk with the instructor with whom they wish to work. Professional writing majors enrolled in BTW 220 must enroll in BTW 290 for 1 hour of credit. Students should consult with the Director of BTW if interested in an independent study. BTW 402 Descriptive English Grammar (same as ENGL 402) This course provides an introduction to the variety and structure of English. Alongside our study of words, sentences, meaning, and other aspects of language, we will explore the applications of grammar in such areas as writing, education, literature, and politics. Credit: 3 hours or 1 unit
